Protein Supplements

Everyone seems to know a little bit about protein and what it does, but this is perhaps the worst possible situation. Companies have marketed themselves to the point where everyone thinks protein is the magic supplement, and that it will help you accomplish your goals in record time. Unfortunately, this is not the case. In fact, protein itself can work rather slow. Depending on what type of activity you are doing, and what type of protein you are taking, the results will vary.

Typically, when people think about protein supplements, they think about a powder based shake, or protein bar. These are the two most popular forms available, and most of them work somewhat well. The hard part is differentiating the good from the best. The first thing to look at, is the amount of protein in grams. Depending on the portion of the supplement, you should look for anything between 10g and 30g. Your body can only procress so much protein at a time, and supplements with more than 30g of protein are basically useless to your muscles. Because, that is what a protein supplement is designed to do; build lean muscle mass. If you are taking protein for weight loss or even an energy boost, you are wasting your time and money. Protein is good for one thing, and that is to intereact with your muscles.

The ideal time to take protein, whatever the form may be, is immediately after you workout, especially if you just participated in weight training. Your muscles are hungry and are in need to nurishment. The right type of protein will allow your muscles to eat to their fill and increase the healing and development process. After all, you are tearing you muscles and the re-building of them is what makes your stronger. Therefore, being sore is good, but it needs to be the right type of sore. You can also prevent soreness with muscle recovery supplements, but you will never be completely free of soreness if your workout was perfromed at a high level. But don't worry, this is a good thing.
